Contemporary Outdoor Room
Background
When I met with the client she had a completely barren back garden approximately 5m wide and 12m long with a poor lawn, no plants or any other elements in the garden. Her house was terraced with no side entrance, which meant all the construction materials had to go through the house. This would make the build more challenging and awkward.
Upon meeting her I soon realised that she had plans for something special in her garden. She had an eye for fine materials and good quality features. She was a lady who had travelled extensively and seen examples of fine landscaping in places such as Dubai.
Brief
The brief was to design a garden for relaxing and entertaining. A roof structure with shelter was required and the garden was to have a contemporary style.
She liked the idea of water and fire, this was to be a space of calm. The floral colour scheme could vary yet she like purples combined with orange and blue.
Garden Plan
I returned to show her three design ideas that I had drawn up. Completely different ideas and she liked the third option. The plan was to have clean lines with some separation within the space to create interest. A simple but strong design that would stand the the test of time would be built with some contrasting material choices. A palette of cream and charcoal for the hard landscaping complimented with hardwood boundary fencing and the interior roof structure. A bespoke outdoor coffee table was created under a striking circular fire that could be enjoyed on two couches with unique their colourful French fabric.
Structural planting was important to balance against the hard landscaping and a wide range of grasses and vibrant flowering perennials would create interest throughout the year.
